There is growing division within the Supernatural VR fitness community over whether users will continue paying the subscription fee or decide to cancel. Following recent layoffs and uncertainty about future updates, many users are questioning the long-term value of the service.

Supernatural currently offers more than 3,000 on-demand VR workout lessons, which has led some subscribers to believe there is still enough content available, even if no new workouts are added. However, others argue that the current subscription price is no longer justified without fresh content and ongoing innovation. A major concern among users is whether Supernatural will be able to continue licensing music from major artists, a feature that has long differentiated the platform from competitors.

One longtime user, Chip, shared his disappointment with the changes. While praising the overall experience, he explained that he plans to cancel his subscription. According to him, the library is extensive enough to remain useful for a while, but not at the current price point without continued updates.

Although there are alternative VR fitness apps such as FitXR and popular rhythm games like Beat Saber, many Supernatural users feel these platforms do not fully replicate the experience. Supernatural’s polished production, motivational coaching, and curated music playlists have set a higher standard that competitors have struggled to match.

For some members, the decision to stay goes beyond the workouts themselves. Stefanie Wong, a Bay Area accountant and longtime Supernatural user, says the app’s value lies in its community and coaches. She has been involved since shortly after the pandemic began and has helped organize user meetups. Despite the uncertainty, she plans to remain subscribed as long as the service remains available. For her, the emotional connection to the coaches and fellow users outweighs the lack of new content.

A New Phase for Supernatural

Shortly after the layoffs, I joined a Supernatural “Together” workout session, a multiplayer feature that allows users to train simultaneously in shared virtual spaces. During the session, I met Chip and Alisa, and we discussed the changes facing the platform while catching our breath between rounds.

Previously, Supernatural regularly featured themed workouts, celebrity-hosted sessions like those involving Jane Fonda, and frequently updated playlists. This particular session focused entirely on Imagine Dragons, highlighting one of the app’s signature artist series.

As we punched targets in rhythm, pre-recorded motivational messages from Supernatural coach Dwana Olsen played throughout the workout, encouraging users to stay present and energized. Her words emphasized movement, gratitude, and the potential for growth—core elements that have defined the Supernatural experience.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the app’s future, the session itself was energizing and emotionally resonant. After finishing a round, we exchanged virtual high-fives and prepared to continue. The shared sense of effort, encouragement, and connection underscored what many users fear losing if Supernatural ultimately shuts down.

For loyal subscribers like Alisa, the experience remains deeply meaningful. As she put it after the workout, the app is still beautiful—not just because of the visuals or music, but because of the sense of togetherness it creates.
