Europe’s push to rein in Big Tech is increasing, and the European Commission plans to announce new regulations for Google next month. The rules could force Google to be nicer to its EU competitors, but the company has some concerns. Google does not raise this as a manifestation of its anti-competitive inclination, but rather as a genuine concern for user privacy.
Heather Adkins, vice president of security engineering at Google, told Wired that the EU proposals could raise serious security and privacy issues. Potential changes come in two forms. First, regulators want to dethrone Gemini as the only AI service built into Android. This would mean allowing users to integrate other AI models and giving them access to the Gemini-like system. Separately, the EU wants Google to share anonymous search data with other companies.
“If implemented as described today, I believe that within a short period of time on Android, we would see a significant increase in fraud in the EU,” Adkins said, noting that these events could occur within a few weeks of implementing the changes.
